Veles is a guardian power and earth god with ties to water and the underworld. If Rod guards the souls of the dead, Veles watches their bodies. However, as Rod declines, Veles is gaining more responsibility for petitioners as well.
As a deity of cattle and commerce, Veles guards farmers and merchants, and is a favored patron of those going on long business trips. Herdsmen especially revere him, and his earth aspect reinforces this. His realm in Earth is merely a labyrinth of passages, more for show than anything else. But his Bytopian realm, opposite Rod’s in Dothion, is a growing center for commerce. There are many sheep and cattle farms in the hills here, and the central town, Vlasopolis, is a rival to Yeoman nowadays. Also within the realm is the tomb-city of Volograd, where Dmitri the Morbid keeps watch over empty tombs which, like the monuments in Rod’s realm, mark the arrival of new petitioners in the realm.
Veles is associated with the winter solstice and spring equinox. Animals linked with him are dragons and cattle. Magic, musicians, wealth and trickery are also attributed to him.
He is also the opponent of thunder-god Perun, and the battle between two of them constitutes one of the most important myths of Slavic mythology. No direct accounts survive, but reconstructions speculate that he may directly continue aspects of the Proto-Indo-European pantheon and that he may have been imagined as (at least partially) serpentine, with horns (of a bull, ram or some other domesticated herbivore), and a long beard.
